Mayors Celebrate Volunteers “Going the Extra Mile”

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – October 25, 2018 – Volunteers who go the extra mile in service and selfless contribution in order to make a difference in their local communities are being celebrated across America on Extra Mile Day. On November 1, mayors from all fifty states are making a declaration to celebrate the significant impact and difference-making contribution that volunteers make.

In association with Extra Mile America, Extra Mile Day is a growing movement dedicated to highlighting the power of volunteerism in connection with the “go the extra mile” message. The day’s popularity continues to soar across the United States. Created in 2009 with 23 inaugural cities, 550 mayors are expected to make the 2018 declaration.

Tucson, Arizona, Mayor Jonathan Rothschild has made the November 1 Extra Mile Day declaration. “I am constantly impressed by how many Tucsonans go the extra mile in their work, in their volunteer activities, and in their daily lives. That level of volunteer caring and effort is a big part of what makes Tucson a great place to live.”

Mayor Tracy Farrish Gant is another mayor celebrating the local extra mile volunteers in the Town of Edmonston, Maryland. “We’ve celebrated ‘Extra Mile Day’ for a number of years. Whether it is helping to plant trees, picking up trash, delivering meals to seniors, planting flowers at Town Hall, creating a fruit orchard at the Community Garden, or just checking on our elderly residents, the Town of Edmonston has many outstanding volunteers.”

“Going the extra mile can happen in a thousand different ways and it is in doing that little bit more where a positive change can be created,” shares Shawn Anderson, the motivational author and visionary behind the day’s declaration.

Anderson concludes, “Extra Mile Day, however, is more than one day during the year to recognize ‘go the extra mile’ heroes; it is a reminder that every day and every hour is a chance for each of us to do more, give more and add more value to create the positive change we seek. Extra Mile Day reminds us not to look at others and wonder what they are doing to make the world better, but instead, to look at the person in the mirror and ask, ‘How are you ‘going the extra mile’ to make the world better?’”
