MS. JILL CHRISTMAN, OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY AWARD FINALIST

Ms. Jill Christman, an outstanding science teacher at Canyon del Oro High School, has been named a finalist for the Outstanding High School Faculty Award, presented by Arizona Online. The award is selected by a panel of representatives from districts throughout Southern Arizona.

Applicants are judged on the following criteria:

  • Teaching preparation and experience

  • Leadership ability

  • Participation in co-curricular or extracurricular activities involving students

  • Innovation or unique teaching practices

  • Evidence of successful teaching

  • Recognition by colleagues

  • Community involvement

Ms. Christman was recognized at University of Arizona football and basketball games. All nine finalists will be honored at a banquet held this spring, at the University of Arizona’s Hall of Champion, where the Teacher of the Year will be announced.

ABOUT MS. JILL CHRISTMAN

Ms. Christman earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Arizona. She also completed a post-baccalaureate teacher preparation program at the University of Phoenix.

She is an innovative, inspiring leader at Canyon del Oro High School, who continually pursues teaching techniques that helps students with complex chemistry and forensic science material. Additionally, She has a “flipped classroom” model, which has students watch short lectures the night before class, note any questions, and go to school the next day, ready to expand their learning.

Ms. Christman has participated in programs designed to enhance teaching in the science sector. Her blended-learning technique has been instituted by other teachers across the state. She has also worked with the University of Arizona to create a sun-safe curriculum, and has developed chapter exercises for a forensic science textbook. Ms. Christman’s dedication to her students extends beyond the classroom, and into the school’s Chemistry Club, Be Kind Club, and her AP with WE service. She also works with students who wish to submit to the SARSEF science competition, and is an IB Extended Essay Advisor.
